Boynton Beach Driver Saved by Good Samaritans

Just when you thought the only headlines were to inform us of bad news, a group of Boynton Beach motorists recently spontaneously and heroically teamed up to save a local woman’s life. The act of bravery, selflessness, and teamwork occurred on May 5 at the intersection of Woolbright Road and Congress Avenue, moments after Laurie Rabyor suffered a medical episode that rendered her unconscious behind the wheel.

Jannette Rivera Stepped Up First

Rabyor may have been seriously injured in an accident had these good Samaritans not bravely stepped in to save her. Rabyor was seen by her coworker, Jannette Rivera, slumped over the steering wheel as her car slowly approached the intersection. Rivera immediately sprang into action, and several other bystanders – all strangers to one another- all worked together to keep Rabyor out of harm’s way and get her the medical attention she needed.

Perfect Strangers Working Together to Save Another Stranger

Rivera raced across the street, waving her arms to get the attention of the other drivers. Several people then got out of their cars to help bring Rabyor’s vehicle to a stop. Once the car was stopped, a woman grabbed a dumbbell out of her car, and a man used it to break the rear passenger side window of Rabyor’s car. Another man then climbed through the window to unlock the passenger side door. The group of Good Samaritans put the car in park, then worked together to push it to a nearby Seven-Eleven parking lot, where a nurse who was calling 9-1-1 provided medical attention for Rabyor until the fire department arrived. All remained at the scene until the fire department arrived.

The Boynton Beach Police Department shared the video of the rescue with the general public in hopes of identifying and recognizing the courageous strangers who acted so selflessly in an effort to save Rabyor’s life. Royal Caribbean has donated a six-to-eight night cruise and a $2,000 gift card to Rabyor and each person who helped save her life.

Rabyor said a mixture of high-blood pressure medications and fasting for a colonoscopy was to blame for the medical episode. In addition to Rivera, other people that helped rescue Rabyor included Army Staff Sgt. Juan Chavez, Michael Edelstein, and David Formica, and upwards of 15-20 others who have yet to be publicly identified. Rabyor’s employer recently informed the Police Department that she is doing fine and has returned to work.
